Independiente breaks 12-year winless streak at Gimnasia's home ground

Victory keeps their hopes of remaining in the top flight alive

Independiente's victory over Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata on Saturday was their first at the Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo in 12 years. The 2-1 win in the third round of the Copa de la Liga Profesional kept their hopes of avoiding relegation alive.

Carlos Tevez's team took the lead through Leandro Benegas in the first half, but Valentin Colazo equalized for Gimnasia in the second half. However, Independiente secured the victory with a goal from Matias Gimenez in the 85th minute.

The win was a major boost for Independiente, who are currently in 19th place in the 26-team Primera Division. They are now just two points from the safety zone and have a game in hand on their rivals.
